25 MPH: It's Now the Law

Following a lengthy process involving a public hearing that was continued for months and the completion of an independent traffic engineering analysis, the Village adopted a 25 mph maximum speed limit for all Village streets with the exception of RT 22 which is a State Road.  Key Facts supporting the reduced speed limit include:

  • The risk of pedestrian fatality is approximately 3.26 times higher with a 30 mph posted speed limit than with a 25 mph speed limit.
  • Outside of New York City, the NYSDOT reports that Westchester County experiences the second most pedestrian-involved accidents in the state of New York.

Be mindful of your speed as you travel throughout the Village.  While a minor speed reduction, pedestrian safety and local quality of life are greatly enhanced.

The maximum Village speed limit within 300 feet of a school remains at 20 mph.

When walking or running on local streets, always face oncoming traffic. Please use designated crosswalks when crossing the street. Bicyclists, on the other hand, should ride in the same direction as traffic. Also, bicycles are not permitted to be ridden on the sidewalks in the downtown business district.
